fitzgerald

There is just something fantastic about reading from a beautifully bound work of art. Maybe it's not as convenient as an iPad or a Kindle, and probably more expensive, but I like the feel and smell of paper between my fingers as I turn the pages. And when I'm not turning the pages of that particular book, I like the look of them lined up on our five bookshelves. Admittedly, my G has a bigger collection of attractive hardcovers although many of them are science fiction replete with cheesy book jackets. Perhaps that's part of why he prefers the hard cover - strip off that jacket and it looks like a regular cloth bound book. My contributions to our collection mostly consist of "literary" paperbacks. But, that copy of Pride and Prejudice that I'm reading - it's one of those new Penguin classics with the vintage cover designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith . And she has a new collection of F.Scott Fitzgerald books to add to my collection. I just have to keep the dr...

something girly

in the last month I cajoled my G into watching the BBC Pride and Prejudice mini-series and in the last week into following it up with the Joe Wright  Pride & Prejudice film  (the one with Keira Knightley). I had already seen the Keira Knightley version somewhat recently and had been charmed by the gorgeous countryside and general, you know, girlieness of it. Ah romance. Naturally, after imposing the overacted but more book inclusive miniseries on my man, I wanted him to compare it to the movie along with me. And now that I have and we both agree that the movie is better despite the plot missteps, I'm reading the book. Actually, as per usual, I'm reading three books right now.  Ms. Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Dan Savage's The Commitment , and Eat Pray Love (Belinda don't judge me!). I guess I treat books a little like tv - I like to watch more than one show and still come back to it. The last couple of weeks has been a true test of my nature. I tend to be a ...

on "literature"

ehem. Have I ever mentioned I have a problem with the amount of magazines I subscribe to? My husband hates it. I subscribe (because it's the best way to support the magazine publishing industry, and they cost waaaaaaaay less that way), they arrive in the mail and, yep, there they are. A literal pile of to do. It's a fun to do list, but I admit, I don't get around to reading them as fast as I might like. And then there is the whole recycling aspect. Usually I bring them to work and leave them in our break room for others to enjoy, but I admit, I have trouble keeping up. It's the same way with my email. I subscribe to the emails that I want to receive, but then the emails from jcrew, martha stewart, ideeli, ready made , bhg , fill up my inbox and I just don't quite get to them. But I don't want to stop getting them. ridiculous. If I could spend my days digging around in my email, reading magazine and blogs, I think I could be thoroughly entertained for the rest of...

on disappearances

{via design*sponge } today is the day I announce the winner of my Pretty as a Posie giveaway. I held it off for a week and then, completely disappeared. off the electronic map although I traced my progress on a map. If you are looking for the winner. see the next post. but first... I'm too good at making dissatisfying excuses that make me feel worse, so I'm not going to give you one. I will say that I was oddly busy and quite distracted before I mimicked this ellipses. there were doctor's appointments, work, class and then friends (which is so nice to be reminded that I have), and I kept breathing in, waiting for the long weekend in Cannon Beach with my G.  My head was spinning with things I was convinced I needed to finish before we took off on Friday and didn't get home until Monday, dreamy pictures of not-much to come. of course not everything got done, and worse, not everything needed doing. was I manufacturing the need to do these things to make me feel like I...

Sexually, I'm More of a Switzerland

dead

Yeah. that's how the news entered my inbox this morning - "dead" in the subject line. At 91 years, the legend J.D. Salinger has died . Recently I pledged to read the printed word - you know, good ol' fashioned books and such. Meg announced it and, like many things that Meg announces, I found myself instantly connected to the idea of detaching myself from the screen and digesting the paper. I love books. Our house is full of them. So full in fact that recently we had to reorganize the bookshelves - a project which, once taken on, is completely absorbing and hard to complete. I suddenly find myself drawn into the books I've read and loved, read and hated, and bought and haven't read yet. So, amid this project, I settled on reading J.D. Salinger's Franny and Zooey . It was a beat-up paperback that I thought I'd read and discard (we were weeding out books too - my dining room table has been covered in stacks of books to give away or sell (since the merge ...
